The terms soft firm stiff etc which have in the past been related to undrained shear strength are only used as qualative terms in Eurocode.
The quantative terms are now low medium high CONSISTENCY and relate directly to values of measured undrained shear strength.
The term firm now refers to a cohesive which can be easily dented by the thumb.
This is bound to cause confusion particularly where information from older SIs is used in conjunction with work carried out using Eurocode.

It is clear that many clients, consultants and contractors are watching to see how Eurocode will be implemented. Although the Standards are often prescriptive there are some grey areas and some areas where European drafting has influenced the final documents. This means that many people are quick to dismiss the relevance of the Eurocode, however, those same people should realise that these documents are not Codes of Practice and therefore carry much more weight. Ignore at your peril!

Can anybody shed some light on the interpretation of "firm cohesive" used in column 5 of Table 3 of BS EN ISO 22475-1:2006 Geotechnical investigation and testing versus the term "firm consistency" used in column 6 of the Table. In other words does "firm cohesive" refer to undrained shear strength?

The first Eurocode Discussion Forum was excellent, however, it produced very few answers. The real question would be are designers going to insist on high quality samples to obtain good quality results at a cost or will they be satisfied with traditional samples at lower cost, with the inherent disturbance which will lead to more conservative values for the design.
From the first meeting it woudl seem that the consultants and clients present would prefer to use Eurocode compliant tests.

there are many areas where industry will need to look at current practice, for instance 22475 pt2 requires all rig operators involved in taking samples and insitu tests should hold an appropriate qualification or have undergone documented training. I am not aware of any skilled operator/ forman driller who can demonstrate this level of knowledge. If we are to comply with Eurocode, industry will need to look at such issues and make endevours to install the necessary process to be compliant.

Geotechnical Engineering approached Equipe to discuss the confusion within the industry regarding the introduction and implementation of Eurocode. This was discussed with some clients and learned societies and it was decided that there was a real requirement for bringing the industry together to share knowledge, experience and concerns. The Forums have developed from this concept and are not Eurocode training courses attendees will learn an awful lot about Eurocode.
